If your new kitten or cat has taken to scratching parts of your furniture, like the corner of your sofa or your dinning table leg then there are a number of things you can do before they damage them for good.

Firstly understand that the scratching instinct is important behaviour in cats, it helps them file down and clean their claws just like we do with a nail file or scissors, so it’s crucial that they have somewhere they can scratch when the urge arises.  If they haven’t already got one, get them a scratch post or board.  Once you have one, it’s time to teach your cat where it’s acceptable to scratch and where it’s not.

Cat can be naturally shy, this could be inherited, just like in humans.  However others might have not be socialised with humans as kittens and don’t regard people as a normal part of life, this means they will shy away from humans and hide somewhere.  Some cats might have had a bad experience and be scared around people because they associate humans with painful or cruel acts.

You can help shy cats though, it does help if you work out why your cat maybe shy in the first place.  Those that have experience cruel behaviour will need more time to adjust than those who are just naturally shy or not had much human interaction.

Cats just like any animal or person can have problems adapting to new environments, may feel imitated or scared, might not have been house trained properly or may have an attitude problem. All of these things can get in the way of you and your cat bonding or spending time together. You might even be considering re-homing your cat because you cant stand the constant meowing or cleaning up their little accidents.

Before your really get fed up with your cat think about joining a cat forum where there are some very educated people who are passionate about cats and they offer their advice for free. I recently became member of a forum where the information on offer was astounding plus you get to meet other cat people too. It was my first ventured out into a cat forum but I think I’ll be making regular visits there in the future because it’s already taught me so much!

Cat to KittenOf late I’ve noticed a big change in my cat Jasmine, it seems at 6 years old she’s suddenly become a kitten again and with her new kitten like behaviour uncharacteristically affectionate.

She used to spend her days away from humans hiding in the wash basket which is where she in this picture or sleeping in the bathroom.  She was never a cat to sit on your knee, she wouldn’t even share the same sofa as another human but occasionally she would sit with her big sister Willow.
