Why clean your cats teeth?

Since 85 % of ageing cats have dental problems it’s better to start brushing their teeth while their still in the prime especially since dental problems are the most common health problems in cats.

Just like we brush our teeth and visit the dentist it’s important for your cat health for their teeth to be cleaned regular too. If you don’t clean your cats teeth then they may develop inflammed gums which could led to gingivitis and in turn a condition called periodontal disease.  If you allow periodontal disease to develop you’re putting your cats health at risk as this could lead to heart, kidney, and liver problems or even death. But this can be prevented by routinely brushing your cats teeth.

Tips for getting your cat to let you brush their teeth

If your cat is still a kitten then get them used to you putting your fingers in their month by gently inserting a finger and rubbing along the gum line every few days.  Once they’ve got used to this you can either use a finger brush or a cat tooth brush without toothpaste.  When you get to the stage when you think your kitten will allow you to brush their teeth properly, put the feline toothpaste on the brush and allow them to lick it so they get used to the taste.  Only then insert the tooth brush into your cats month and use a gentle circle motion to clean their teeth.  You can also use this method with adult cats but they may need a little more time, so if possible it’s best to get them used to this while they are still young.

It’s important to praise your cat for letting you brush their teeth, so show them lots of affection, let them play with their favourite toys, give them their favourite food.  Your cat is much more likely to comply if they know that their behaviour will be rewarded.

To prevent your cat from lashing out when trying to clean their teeth, wrap them in a towel, they find this comforting but it also means that they can’t use their claws to cause you damage.

You can buy cat tooth cleaning kits online or speak to your local vet who could do the job for you.  As you know prevention is always better than a cure and it’s no different when it comes to your cats teeth, so take a few minutes every few days to give your cats teeth a brush and check their mouths in general for any issues as this could save you a fortune in vets bills.
