Where did that Persian ball of fur come from?

This cat breed was originally from Persia, a country now known as Iran. Over the years selective breeding has created a large number of colours, so there’s plenty of choice. But this selective breeding has also favoured a flatter face which has related heath problems. Like a lot of cat breeds there is always a small group of dedicated breeder who’s efforts help to preserve the older type of Persian breed.

Persian Cats Common Health Problems

Persians are known for a number of health problems such as the hereditary disease which affects the kidneys in almost half of this cat breed in some countries. This is known by the name of polycystic kidney disease. Another problem area for Persians is their eyes, they may find it difficult to keep them clean and healthy so help by cleaning them when your grooming your cat to help keep them in top condition.

The Appearance of Persian Cats

Persians are the most well known and recognisable cat breed. If you asked random people on the street they would be able to name the Persian as a cat breed even if they couldn’t think of any others. They are the most recognised cat breed too with their abundance of fur, fluffy tail and their flat faces.  This cat breed has a have a long thick coat, wide head, heavy boned muscular body and short legs. They have large eyes and a shorten muzzle. In some cases their forehead, nose and chin will be in vertical alignment so the face will be very flat. They have smaller than average ears which finishes off the scrunched up look of the Persians face.

A Persians Personality

They generally have a laid back easy going nature. Since Persian cats are fairly placid they adapt well to being an indoor cat. They have a sweetness about them and aren’t as demanding as oriental breeds like the Siamese, nor are they as noisy. They don’t really climb or jump much so you shouldn’t find them climbing the curtains. They aren’t really a destructive cat either so your sofa should be safe too. They prefer to spend their days lying around and being admired. They can be playful but in a more reserved way than other cats but they will still bring you plenty of smiles and laughter.

Grooming A Persian Cat

Persian’s have so much fur they can’t keep it clean themselves so will need regularly grooming and bathing. They should be groomed at least once every few days otherwise their fur gets tangled and the only way to deal with these big tangles is to shave the fur off. They will need more grooming in spring when they begin to shed their coat in preparation for the summer.

A Word of Warning About The Persian Breed

There’s no doubt that Persians cats are very beautiful with a lovely calm and affectionate temperament, but they do need a lot of grooming and if you don’t have the time to do this almost daily then they are not a cat breed that’s suitable for you.
