Cat can be naturally shy, this could be inherited, just like in humans.  However others might have not be socialised with humans as kittens and don’t regard people as a normal part of life, this means they will shy away from humans and hide somewhere.  Some cats might have had a bad experience and be scared around people because they associate humans with painful or cruel acts.

You can help shy cats though, it does help if you work out why your cat maybe shy in the first place.  Those that have experience cruel behaviour will need more time to adjust than those who are just naturally shy or not had much human interaction.

Firstly make sure there is somewhere quiet that your cat can retreat too when they feel that human interaction is stressing them out, this will allow them to calm down and relax.  They are also more likely to consider interacting if they know they can withdrawal from the situation if they feel the need.

You can also use cat permonomones such as Feliway which is available in a plugin diffuser or spray.  These help relax the cat and create what your cat perceives to be  a safe and secure environment.

Spend time in the same room as your cat but don’t pay any attention to them, so watch the tv, read a book, make sure you’re relaxed and not stressed or angry.  Screaming at a computer game will not encourage your cat or kitten to approach you.  Calming reading a book is likely to get your cat to come over and try and get your attention.  You could always try leaving a few cat treats on the floor near where you’re sat to encourage your cat to come closer.

Using their language will also help so narrow your eyes and turn your head away from them, this will reassure them that you’re not a threat.  If your cat has their ears flat against their head, their afraid to let them retreat to their safe place.

Cat’s can also tell a lot from the tone of voice you use when you talk to them, so talk to them often in a soft quiet voice even if it’s just to say hello when you walk past them.  The more they get used to your voice, the less likely they will be to run away every time you speak.

Once your cat will allow you to get within a metre invite them closer with a cat toy such as a fishing rod type of toy, hopefully their urge to hunt with outweigh their shyness.

Remember you can’t force your cat to interact, it has to be on their terms and in their own time, always encourage positive behaviour so your cat learns that you’re not a threat and becomes less timid around you.
